Are you unknowingly damaging your black hair?

It may sound counterproductive: we put forth so much effort for our hair to look good, only to subsequently destroy it. Black hair in particular, with its kinky and curly texture requires extra effort, which in turn could be damaging your hair more than you know. With knowledge, we can mitigate this.

SHAMPOOS WITH HARSH INGREDIENTS

Moisture is so important to black hair, and the harsh ingredients in certain shampoos will strip your hair of its natural oils. Finding moisture-infusing products and conditioners will help preserve the moisture your hair needs to thrive. Additionally, washing hair only once a week will help from over-drying hair follicles.

WEARING WIGS AND WEAVE TOO OFTEN

Though it can protect your hairs to wear wigs and weaves, keeping them in too long can actually damage the hair by causing tangles, knots, and other issues. Make sure to take breaks from wigs every so often, and remove weaves when the hair gets too dry or starts to shed. The worst result of overused wigs and weaves would be having to cut off most of your actual hair– hair that you’d been actively trying to protect.

TIGHT BRAID STYLES

Unfortunately, tight braids can cause permanent hair loss if not careful. Due to the combined weight of braids and extensions, they pull on hair attached to your scalp. This can cause traction alopecia along your hair line, which means that hair will not grow back. If you have tight braids, extra care should be taken when styling to ensure they do not pull on your hair.

USING DYES AT HOME

It can be an attractive idea to dye hair at home as it’s cheaper and easier to fit into your schedule. However, the process is chemical in nature and as such, easy to unknowingly damage your hair. If you are not certain of the process, consult professionals like us at The Style Bar DC! We understand how dyes can dry out hair and cause breakage, thinning, and dull hair color. We’ll make sure your color is vibrant and healthy.
