Tips to maintain your balayage highlights

The balayage highlighting technique is massively popular due to its effortless, natural, sun-kissed look. No matter how long your hair is, if you have balayage highlights, you’ll want to maintain them. Read on for our compilation of helpful tips.

TREAT YOUR HAIR WEEKLY

You don’t need to come to the salon every week to keep your highlights vibrant and well-maintained; and this tip, you can do at home. Simply adding a deep-moisturizing treatment into your weekly routine does the trick. A natural oil, such as  almond oil, will net you great results. Just rinse your hair with hot water to prep the cuticle, then generously apply the oil, and wrap your hair up in plastic wrap. The longer you keep the oil on your wrapped hair, the more moisturize will be absorbed. Once you’ve reached the point where you feel enough absorption has occurred, remove the plastic wrap and head to the shower. You may need to wash twice to make sure you remove all the oil and so that your hair doesn’t look greasy. The shine and healthiness your hair will exude will boost the vibrancy and overall appearance of your balayage highlights.

WASH YOUR HAIR LESS FREQUENTLY

This tip really depends on your hair type and your scalp type. If you’re the type to get oily very quickly and find that you need to wash every day, then continue doing so. However, if that isn’t the case for you, washing a couple times a week will suffice and will help prevent damage. When you wash your hair, you’re stripping it of its natural oils and dulling the balayage color. Try reducing your washes to 2-3 times a week and use a dry shampoo in between washes if needed. Additionally, do not use heat to dry your hair. This will extend the life of your color.

BOOST YOUR COLOR (with the right products)

One of the reasons people love balayage highlight is because of how it grows out naturally, without leaving a big root line. However, as your hair grows out, can still maintain the vibrancy of your color between salon visits, with the right products. If your balayage color is on the blonde side, use a purple shampoo to keep the color fresh and remove any brassiness. If your balayage color is more on the caramel or blonde side, use a color depositing product in the shade closest to yours. This will maintain that fresh out of the salon color for several additional weeks.

Visit Your Salon For A Touch Up

While these are great ways to maintain color between salon visits, you’ll of course never get that amazing, fresh-salon look without actually going back to the salon. Fortunately, balayage highlights don’t need to be refreshed on a monthly basis. When you go in for a touch up you have the option of moving up the highlights closer to the root where you initially started, or just placing a few baby lights around the face, or freshening up the highlights from the hairline all the way down. It’s all about what you want to see with your hair style. Balayage is so customizable, easy to maintain, and it looks great on everyone.
