Clean your beard.
The first step may seem like a no-brainer. You wash the hair on your head, and you might even condition it, too. The same should follow for the hair on your face. A clean beard is a canvas for everything else we advise you do below!
Comb it out.
We wrote an entry not long ago about the best way to comb your beard, so we definitely advise you check that out. Here’s the summary: brush it against the grain, and then with it to get all the hairs in the same direction. This is vital to the next step, so don’t skip it.
Time for a trim.
Clippers are the way to go trimming your beard consistently. If you’re not sure how much length to take off, we definitely recommend you start with a longer guard so you don’t end up regretting how much length you lose. As for how you trim, you can go about it in different ways– either the same length all over, or if you’re more adventurous, you can try varying the lengths of your guard in different parts of your beard.
For a flattering beard shape, you can go shorter on the sides of your face starting at your temples, and leaving hair a bit longer down by your chin. We recommend your mustache be about the same length as the shorter sides, as the hair growth is denser and will appear to have more visual weight.
Tackle the neckline.
Trimming your neckline is tricky because it requires precision, and if you mess up, it will be quite easy to notice. So take extra care with this step. A little extra patience can save a lot of time, and potentially, an entire beard.
A good rule of thumb is to take the neckline down to right around the Adam’s apple. Then, you’ll want to make symmetric cuts with your trimmer (no guards this time) leading from the middle of the neck out toward the outsides, following the shape of the jawline. Avoid cutting the neckline too high and close to the jaw- it isn’t flattering.
Oil it up.
Finish with some beard oil. A dry beard is not a happy one. Run your comb through the beard once more to help evenly distribute the oil throughout the beard.
That’s all there is to it! While we’re giving you the tools to maintain your own beard, we also understand how nice it is to leave it in the hands of the professionals every now and then. Luckily, we love to help with that and we’re only a few clicks away from setting you up with a beard trim!
